چکیده

We report the first observed outburst of the magnetic cataclysmic variable XY Ari. Xray observations show a flux increase by an order of magnitude the day after the first signs of outburst. During the 5-d duration the X-ray spin pulse is greatly enhanced and the X-ray spectrum far more absorbed. We suggest that the inner disc pushes inwards during outburst, blocking the view to the lower accreting pole, breaking the symmetry present in quiescence, and so producing a large pulsation. The observations are consistent with a disc instability as the cause of the outburst, although we can’t rule out alternatives. We draw parallels between our data and the UV delay and dwarf nova oscillations seen in non-magnetic dwarf novae.

A precessing accretion disc in the intermediate polar XY Arietis?

Context. XY Ari is the only intermediate polar to show deep X-ray eclipses of its white dwarf. Previously published observations with Ginga and Chandra have also revealed a broad X-ray orbital modulation, roughly antiphased with the eclipse, and presumed to be due to absorption in an extended structure near the edge of an accretion disc. The X-ray pulse profile is generally seen to be double-pe...

The size of the accretion region in intermediate polars: eclipses of XY Arietis observed with RXTE

RXTE observed 20 eclipse egresses of the intermediate polar XY Ari in order to study the size and structure of the X-ray emitting accretion regions. The spin-phase averaged egress lasts 26 s, implying a white dwarf radius of 4.3–7.0 ×10 cm. The individual egresses occur later in orbital phase with later spin phase, as expected if the white dwarf spins in the same sense as the orbital motion. Th...

X-ray Variability of the Magnetic Cataclysmic Variable V1432 Aql

V1432 Aquilae (=RX J1940.2−1025) is the X-ray bright, eclipsing magnetic cataclysmic variable ∼37 away from the Seyfert galaxy, NGC 6814. Due to a 0.3% difference between the orbital (12116.3 s) and the spin (12150 s) periods, the accretion geometry changes over the ∼50 day beat period. Here we report the results of an RXTE campaign to observe the eclipse 25 times, as well as Also Universities ...

We present a 4 year light curve of a cataclysmic variable in M22, based on an analysis of accumulated data from the MOA microlensing survey. The position of the star coincides with that of a transient event observed by HST in 1999, originally attributed to microlensing but later suspected to be a dwarf nova outburst. Two outburst episodes, one in 2002 and one in 2003, with ∆I ∼ 3 are seen in th...

Dwarf nova-type cataclysmic variable stars are significant radio emitters

We present 8–12 GHz radio light curves of five dwarf nova (DN) type Cataclysmic Variable stars (CVs) in outburst (RX And, U Gem and Z Cam), or superoutburst (SU UMa and YZ Cnc), increasing the number of radio-detected DN by a factor of two. The observed radio emission was variable on time-scales of minutes to days, and we argue that it is likely to be synchrotron emission. This sample shows no ...
